Rahu is the grand son of Demon Hiranya Kashyap, who was killed by Lord Vishnu in Narsimha Avatar.Rahu was the son of Viprachitti and Simhika, who was the sister of Prahallad,a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. The initial name or the born name of Rahu is Swarbhanu, which means ‘Splendour of Radiance', which is well described in Rigveda and Yajurveda. It is also mentioned as, Swarbhanu had the bigger size than Sun and used to overshadowing Sun with darkness in the sky. Then Swarbhanu was the assistant of Shukracharya who is well known as the teacher of the Asuras. The appearance of Rahu was mentioned like bloodshot red eyes, big mustache, complexion is described as a mixed color of blue and purple color, which looks like a color of Poison. His head has two horns as he is a Devil and his crown has a skeleton head (skull). He carries a Sword and a Trident (Trishul) in each of his hands. He worships Lord Shiva and thus has three lines on his forehead as well. Decked in shining jewels and ornaments, this Cosmic Trickster always has a Raat-rani flower [Heena or night blooming jasmine] in his hands for he loves the fragrance of it.
